How To Pick a Good Eyelid Surgeon

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery to laymen, is one of the most common surgical procedures performed today. It is one of the easiest to perform, the procedure with the least amount of downtime for the patient, and one of the surgeries that deliver results almost immediately. It is because of these three reasons that many patients don’t take much time to decide that they would want to have blepharoplasty done on their eyelids.

But surgery is surgery, whether it is easily done or not. The term surgery means that it carries certain risks, even low-risk doesn’t mean no risk. The patient must properly address all the risks because it is his own body that is in danger. The first thing that a patient must do in order to lessen the risk is to find a qualified and experienced surgeon. Here are some tips on how to find the right surgeon to perform blepharoplsty.

Make sure that the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or, if in another country, by its equivalent eg in Australia it might be the Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (AAFPS). While this tip is far from a no-brainer, making sure that the surgeon is board-certified will greatly lessen the risk that you make a mistake and find a run-of-the-mill plastic surgeon to perform the surgery for you. While not all board-certified surgeons are perfect, a procedure as simple as blepharoplasty should be no problem for one. And to make sure if your surgeon is really board-certified, go to the website for your country’s medical surgeons and verify his identity.

Recognize the red flags. It is possible that some surgeons have been exposed to mainstream media and are quite recognizable and popular in your country. This is all well and good but this does not guarantee that they have the skills necessary to perform the surgery at a more than satisfactory level. Here are some of the red flags that should warn you if your chosen surgeon is just for show or the real thing.

The surgeon’s office is not as neat and pristine as one might reasonably expect – This one should be the starting point of the search for the ideal surgeon. If you want somebody to have free rein with your eyes, make sure that he includes cleanliness in his list of obsessions.

The surgeon’s fees are low – If the surgeon charges at most 80% of the figure that you have been given by most doctors, you should definitely leave that one out of consideration. There are many reasons that his fees are low, and most, like probably his lack of experience in plastic surgery or his low skill-level, don’t look too good for the patient.

The surgeon doesn’t have hospital privileges – This is very important right here, for the sake of the patient’s safety. If anything were to happen at the middle of the procedure, it’s good to know that a hospital is waiting to take you in.

It’s not easy to determine the ideal surgeon for your eyelid surgery. But if you follow the tips stated above, then at least you have a bigger chance than most that you will find a very satisfactory surgeon, one that has all the skills and experience needed to perform the job at a high level.
